Wii

The Wii is Nintendo’s 5th home console and is their entry in the seventh generation of video game consoles. It was released worldwide in 2006 and outsold combined sales of its competitors (Sony’s PS3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360) in its launch period. It is Nintendo’s most sold home console and the 4th best selling home console of all time. Nintendo decided not to compete with their competitors in graphical capabilities this time shifted their focus instead on a broader demographic of players. They did that by implementing motion controls in the Wii’s controller, Wii Remote. Games were now also accessible online via their Wii Shop Channel but physical games could be bought on regular sized dvds as well. The Wii didn’t improve much on it’s graphical capabilities from the Gamecube but released a broad library of games utilising the controllers motion sensing and introduced more accessible online gaming. The Wii Remote design is the Wii’s most iconic feature for reimagining the standard video game controller. It resembles a TV remote and has the standard A and B buttons, as well as a directional D-pad. In order to use a directional control stick, a second controller had to be plugged into the Wii Remote.
