The Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) was released worldwide from 1990-1993. It featured a 16-bit microprocessor which made Nintendo enter the fourth generation of video game consoles. NEC Home Electronics released the PC Engine in 1987 (TurboGrafx-16 in NA, 1989) which marked the beginning of the era but were quickly dominated in sales by Nintendo and Sega’s console Sega Genesis. The Super Nintendo was a global success and was especially well received in the PAL region and many countries in Asia compared to the previous console. The console had a big upgrade in graphics and sound capabilities, not only from the NES but also other consoles on the current market. The controller also had a design upgrade with 4 buttons added to the original NES design. It now included left (L) and right (R) back buttons as well as X and Y next to A and B.
